Survision LPR Cameras

LPR Technology

A general scope of the technological features included in Survision LPR cameras

Also called ANPR, Survision's LPR (License Plate Recognition) technology combines OCR and Neural Networks to make our cameras  “optically” read a vehicle’s license plate and transform the graphic data into digital information in real-time (20ms).

Embedded LPR/ANPR processing

We took the heavy LPR/ANPR servers away from the equation by providing our LPR cameras with AI-powered firmware to do the most challenging part of the job.

Why do we do that?

  • Lower Network footprint: Sending processed digital data (No more than 50K per log) instead of a constant VIDEO stream represents enormous savings on data transmission, more stability, and, therefore, fewer chances of failure.
  • Lower costs: Avoiding servers also represents considerable savings in network infrastructure.
  • Easy and cheap to scale: To extend the installation, just add more LPR cameras, not servers or software licenses.
  • Robustness: By having independent, serverless LPR cameras on each lane, widespread failures are unlikely to happen.

Trigger... or Not

Our ANPR cameras don't need any physical device to activate the LPR process; they constantly scan for license plates on the fly; this is called No Trigger Mode. Survision LPR cameras are ideal for triggerless systems such as ticketless parking, free-flow tolling, etc.

Our cameras can also be activated by an external device (Classic Trigger Mode), just like any other camera on the market.

Our goal is to get rid of the physical triggers and save lots of money on infrastructure, but we know that sometimes they are still needed;  that is why our cameras cover the whole spectrum of possible scenarios.

Survision: Software Triggered Cameras

LPR cameras are often part of a more complex environment in which LPR/ANPR data interacts with other information (databases or events) in the whole decision-making algorithm. Survision LPR cameras have their SDK for communicating with your system and to be programmatically triggered (after checking on the database, after ticket retrieval, before opening the barrier, etc.).

This feature is called software trigger and makes our cameras the ideal companion to intelligent solutions in Access Control, Tolling, Security, Parking or Smart cities.

High Speeds

In cases such as tolling, vehicles can go as fast as 250 km/h (155 mph); reading plates in these scenarios is achievable by high-speed LPR cameras; that is why  Survision has focused on building LPR cameras capable of reading and processing license plates in only 20 milliseconds!

This opens a whole world of possibilities when thinking about barrierless, gateless, or ticketless operations by allowing vehicles to ”just keep going” with no speed reduction at all.

Reading more than License Plates

Survision LPR processing

Survision LPR/ANPR cameras can provide additional information for each reading:

Photo (JPEG) of the License Plate: Survision LPR cameras supply a JPEG of the plate for real-time and later manual verifications.

Continuous, real-time video flow: used for security matters and a better understanding of installation and setting issues.

Country and state: These are critical contextual identification elements for some countries or states sharing the same license plate syntax rules.

Direction (of movement): It helps the system eliminate counting or synchronization issues and helps drivers get noticed when going in the wrong direction.

Vehicle Speed: For informational or pedagogical purposes, public display of driving speed has been proved as a speed reduction method.

High-Quality Confidence Level

Defined as "the level of certainty that the system has about a given license plate having been read accurately", LPR Confidence Level is an AI-powered probabilistic calculation that measures “how sure the system is” that its reading is accurate.

A high-quality Confidence Level help operators make better decisions regarding when to approve or discard a reading; correctly used, it can lead to significant operative cost reductions.

Survision has invested heavily in providing a high-quality Confidence Level.

Artificial Intelligence

Through the integration of human analysis across extensive collections of license plates, Convolutional Neural networks AI models work on a significantly greater number of variables with enhanced efficiency, not only for LPR accuracy but also for more intricate and valuable calculations. At survision, we are currently using AI technology for these calculations:

  • Location of the plates in the image
  • OCR (character reading)
  • Confidence level calculation
  • Vector signature of the plate (FingerPrint)
  • Determination of the type of plate
  • Geographical area of origin

Embedded Lighting

Survision Micropak camera with integrated lighting

Independent from any weather condition or external artificial lighting, Survision LPR cameras have their own illumination source:

Shutter synchronized and automatically adjusted: Light powers on only when necessary; this enhances the LED’s lifespan and reduces heat, power consumption, and harmfulness.

Survision LPR cameras automatically adapt their lighting parameters to consider the surrounding lighting changes and maintain a clear image.

The right wavelength: All Survision LPR cameras are available in White Light, best for colored characters or 850nm infrared (IR) light for black characters.

20+ years looking for the Best Hardware

Survision LPR/ANPR cameras are built to do one job only: Read license plates.

Survision LPR camera assembling

Twenty-one years looking up to build an All-in-one camera that contains filming, processing and protecting components; cheaper and easier to install.

Survision cameras can resist as cold as -40°C / °F and hot as +55 °C / 131 °F

The secret behind our long-lasting LPR/ANPR cameras relies on our hardware choice:

  • Dry contact for activating a barrier (or any other external device)
  • Waterproof IP66 removable connectors instead of fixed cable glands, allowing for a much quicker and more reliable set-up.
  • Powered at low voltage (from 12V to 48V), requiring lower certifications and working precautions when installing or maintaining the camera. It makes it easier and cheaper.
  • Ethernet IP Interface, which brings all the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of IP architectures.
  • Specific fixation accessories for appropriate installation in each case scenario (wall, ceiling, pole or ground)
  • Specialized optics and zoom capabilities to match variable aiming distances: from 2 meters (10 feet) to 12 meters (36 feet).

Certification and security protocols

survision LPR cameras Totem Nanopak Assembling

Our LPR/ANPR cameras comply with:

  • RTSP: Ensures that any digital video recording system can record it.
  • H264 Compression:  The best possible quality for a given bandwidth.
  • NTP: The widest supported protocol for camera time synchronization.
  • DHCP: The only widely supported protocol for variable IP addresses.
  • EMC EN 55032: A worldwide mandatory Electro-magnetical compatibility certificate that ensures that the camera does not perturb and is not perturbed by other equipment.
  • IEC 61000-4: A worldwide mandatory certification that provides additional complementary testing to ensure that the camera does not perturb and is not perturbed by other equipment.
  • IEC62471: Ensures that the camera’s lighting is not harmful to human vision.
  • CE MARK: Our cameras are compliant with European Union’s health, safety and environmental regulations.
  • FCC PART 15: Mandatory specific EMC thresholds for the North-American market.
  • CB SCHEME: A worldwide mandatory certification related to electrical safety.
  • IP66 or IP54 protection: Required when a hardware enclosure (such as the SURVISION NANOPAK Totem) or roof is not available to protect the camera.
  • SSL (Secure Socket Layer): The most widely deployed encryption-based security protocol. It ensures integrity and privacy for all data exchanged between the camera and the network.
  • 802.1x: Network authentication protocol that opens ports for network access only to identified and authorized equipment. It avoids unauthorized equipment being connected to the network through the camera’s cable.
  • 802.1q: A protocol that allows for multiple virtual IP networks over a single Ethernet connector. It’s often useful for connecting different applications to the same camera while maintaining separate networks for each application.
