The M50 motorway is the busiest motorway in Ireland. The current route was built in various sections over the course of 27 years, from 1983 to 2010.

Challenge

The motorway suffered from chronic capacity problems caused by high traffic volumes, low-capacity roundabout interchanges, and growing congestion along its orbital route around Dublin.

Solution

A massive upgrade project commenced in early 2006 to expand the infrastructure. Lanes were added, and multiple low-capacity roundabout interchanges were replaced with free-flowing interchanges integrated with Survision LPR cameras to enable billing through License Plate Recognition.

Results

The infrastructure was successfully modernised to handle heavy traffic volumes, replacing outdated interchanges with efficient, free-flowing connections and implementing automated license plate recognition for streamlined tolling and billing operations.
