Pink temporary license plates in France: What do they mean for LPR systems?
Lea Fauvel

Starting January 1, 2026, France introduced a new type of temporary license plate featuring a distinctive pink background.

Although this regulatory change only applies to vehicles registered in France, it raises an important question for parking operators, tolling authorities, access control systems, and security facilities worldwide: Can a change in a license plate's appearance impact LPR performance?

At SURVISION, we evaluated this new plate design under real-world operating conditions. Here is what we found.

Why is France introducing
pink temporary License Plates?

As part of a new regulation introduced in 2026, France now issues temporary registration plates with a pink reflective background instead of the traditional white design.

These temporary registrations are commonly used for:

    • New vehicles awaiting permanent registration
    • Dealer and manufacturer vehicles used for testing or demonstrations
    • Imported vehicles awaiting final registration

The most common prefixes are:

    • WW: Standard temporary registration
    • W: Registration reserved for automotive professionals and dealerships

The purpose of this visual change is to make temporary registrations easier to identify and reduce fraud.

Until now, some expired temporary registrations continued to circulate illegally after their validity period had ended. Since temporary registration numbers can later be reassigned to different vehicles, this situation occasionally resulted in traffic violations being attributed to the wrong owner.

While this new regulation is specific to France, it highlights a broader question for the LPR industry: How well can LPR systems adapt to changes in license plate design?

Why plate design matters for LPR

An ANPR/LPR system does not "see" a license plate the way a human does.

License plate recognition relies on several processing stages, including:

  1. License plate detection
  2. Character segmentation
  3. Contrast analysis
  4. Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
  5. Syntax verification

At first glance, changing a license plate's background color might be expected to affect image contrast, camera performance under bright lighting conditions, the plate's infrared reflectivity, or even character segmentation accuracy. These are legitimate concerns whenever a new license plate design is introduced.

SURVISION testing: Real-world result

Our engineering team tested SURVISION LPR cameras using France's new pink WW temporary license plates under real operating conditions.

The results were clear:

SURVISION cameras maintained the same recognition confidence and reading accuracy as with traditional white plates.

No degradation in OCR performance or plate recognition rates was observed.

Why recognition accuracy
remains unchanged?

For SURVISION LPR systems, the background color itself is not a determining factor. What matters most is maintaining sufficient contrast between the characters and the plate background. In the case of France's new temporary plates, the black characters remain highly distinguishable against the pink reflective background.

In addition, the plate material continues to exhibit strong infrared reflectivity.

When illuminated by SURVISION's infrared lighting, the characters remain clearly defined, allowing our AI-powered recognition algorithms to process the image without any loss of performance. Our software has been designed to remain robust against legitimate variations in license plate appearance while maintaining consistently high recognition accuracy.

Conclusion

France's new pink temporary license plates have no measurable impact on the performance of SURVISION LPR cameras.

Although this change is specific to the French registration system, it demonstrates an important characteristic of modern LPR technology: Well-designed LPR systems should continue delivering reliable performance even as license plate designs evolve.

As governments around the world continue updating registration standards, SURVISION remains committed to ensuring that its LPR solutions are ready for both current and future plate formats.
